Massage for Cancer Patients

Oncology units in hospitals across the country are now implementing complementary therapies such as massage, guided imagery and yoga therapy to aid patients in relaxation and to assist in symptom management for the side effects of traditional cancer therapies.

Massage therapy can be modified in technique, pressure, time and body position to accommodate individuals of all ages and all stages of health and dis-ease.  Cancer is a journey that requires the respect of personal choice in treatment and care and I honor the complexities of those choices. I believe massage can provide a safe space to be nurtured and cared for that can aid in the body's natural healing process.

I have had the privilege of working with patients at California Pacific Medical Center through the Institute For Health And Healing in San Francisco who have been post-surgery, in all phases of treatment in the hospital setting, as well as with women in a clinical setting at the Charlotte Maxwell Complementary Clinic in Berkeley. I was blessed to have been taught to provide a safe massage to cancer patients by Gayle MacDonald, author of Medicine Hands, and leader in bringing massage into the world of oncology and in teaching massage therapists across the country.

Styles Of Acupressure and Massage:
Jin Shin Acupressure
Using the theories of Traditional Chinese Medicine to create a map of pressure points. Gentle finger or hand pressure is applied for a subtle, yet effective session.

Reiki
Therapeutic energy work for restoring and balancing life energy and promoting the body's natural healing process.
Shiatsu
A Japanese bodywork style which uses pressure to points on acupuncture meridians. The rhythmic use of breath, gradual increase in pressure, and gentle stretching allow for a deeply relaxing session.

Acu-Oil Massage
Combining Swedish massage techniques with the power of acupressure points for greater release of muscle tension.
